What is Demon Slayer?

The Japanese manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was written and designed by Koyoharu Gotouge.

From February 2016 to May 2020, it was serialized in Shueisha’s shnen manga magazine Weekly Shnen Jump, with chapters assembled in 23 tankbon volumes. It was simultaneously broadcast in English by Viz Media and in Japanese by Shueisha on their Manga Plus platform. Tanjiro Kamado is a young boy who desires to be a Demon Slayer after his family is murdered and his younger sister, Nezuko, is converted into a demon.

A 26-episode anime television series adaptation produced by Ufotable ran from April to September 2019.

Who is Tengen Uzui?

Tengen Uzui is a major player in the Entertainment District Arc and a key supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He was a former Demon Slayer Corps member who had previously served as Sound Hashira.

Tengen is an eccentric and showy individual who is constantly attempting to be “flamboyant,” with a desire for everything to be dazzling and spectacular, even dubbing himself the god of flashiness and festivals.

This is demonstrated when he becomes excited about how “flamboyant” it would be if Tanjiro Kamado’s blood vessels exploded and tried to take Aoi Kanzaki off to the Entertainment District with him to assist him with a dangerous mission, even spanking her.

He is frequently seen boasting in front of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, asserting that he is “God,” Even calling them rubbish and proclaiming that if he commands them to become dogs, they must obey, and if he orders them to become monkeys, they must obey. Tengen even asks that the trio always entertain and bend down to him, begging him for favors and trying their utmost to charm him.

God of Flashiness and Festivals

Tengen is obsessed with flashiness and flamboyance.

As a Hashira whose duty is to kill high-ranking Demons, Tengen Knew that his life span will be short hence he disposed of his gloomy self and started living a flashy and boastful life.

Although his personality does not click with many like Zenitsu he also impresses many with his charm and boldness. Not to mention he is the most popular for his looks in the series.

The Sound Hashira has always been the most prominent member of the Demon Slayer Corps, but his extravagant antics are more staged than he would have people believe.

The self-proclaimed God of Festivals, who expects devotion and acclaim from his subjects, is essentially a wounded man attempting to cope with his tragic past.

He was not always the life of the party but when he became a Hashira his flamboyance became a way to remind the uncertainty of a Hashira’s life.

Tengen’s Past life

Tengen was not always meant to become a Hashira, He used to be a shinobi before that. Tengen was born into the Uzui clan in a family of nine children.

Due to excessive training, three of the nine children were killed before reaching the age of ten. They were forced to murder each other on the instructions of their cruel father, with their heads and faces covered in masks, without knowing who they were fighting.

Tengen only learned about his father’s ruse after he had murdered two of his siblings. Tengen was disgusted and decided to abandon the clan for good.

Tengen has 3 wives

The wives of Tengen Uzui are Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma.
The wives of Tengen Uzui are Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma.

Although Tengen claimed that his choice of three wives was due to his flamboyance.

Tanjiro revealed that Tengen’s family has a polygamy custom in which fathers pick their sons’ wives when they turn 15.

Though in Tengen’s case, instead of his wives being picked out for him by his father as is tradition with his shinobi family, one of his wives, Suma, approached him herself.

Tengen has the highest regard for each of his wives, all of them are outstanding Kunoichis.

Tengen is the fastest hashira

Tengen is undoubtedly the fastest hashira all thanks to his sound breathing techniques. His speed is no joke when he fights the UM6 demon Gyutaro.

In the demon slayer universe demons have 10 to 15 times the strength of humans and Gyutaro is no ordinary demon he is one of the direct servers of Muzan.

Tengen, on the other hand, is a shinobi, a ninja, and one of the Hashiras, who can move quicker than the blink of an eye and destroy demons with ease.

His sound breathing technique is a variation of thunder breathing, which is one of the fastest breathing techniques.

He was quick enough to keep up with Daki with ease. Not to mention, he decapitated her for the first time so quickly that she didn’t notice until her head landed on her hands.

Tengen vs Gyutaro whole fight sequence

Tengen uses two Nichirin blades

Inosuke is not the only character that uses 2 Nichiren blades in the series. Tengen is the only hashira that uses two Nichirin blades.

He wields two massive amber-colored Nichirin cleavers, each with a notch in the sharp ends of their blades and joined together at the tsuku by a metal chain, like nunchucks. His blades are supposed to be loaded with explosive force.

Tengen does not use a sword sheath since his swords are not light, and instead carry it on his back, wrapped in fabric.

Not only that Tengen also carries hundreds of black beads that, with the smallest collision, cause huge explosions capable of injuring the bodies of Upper-Rank demons.

The maestro of sound breathing

Tengen is the sole user of sound breathing, a descendant of thunder breathing.

Tengen invented sound breathing to combine it with his ninja tools; he has mastered the use of the sound surrounding him to detect enemies, use his ninja tools such as bombs to create friction with his sword to unleash powerful explosions, and can even learn an enemy’s attack pattern by simply listening.

Uzui even has a Musical Score method that adapts to his Sound Breathing.

He could attack demons using rhythmic patterns and bumps, which effectively worked as a hack to reveal the fighting patterns and strategies of various demons. As it did work against Gyoutaro and fight him off.

He was not set to marry Suma

She is the first and youngest of Tengen’s three wives. Although she was not set to marry Uzui, Suma disrupted her sister’s alleged marriage with Tengen when she barged into the marriage interview because of her affection for him. She eventually became successful and married Tengen instead.

Suma is a female shinobi that works for the Demon Slayer Corps. She possesses the necessary stealth, suppleness, and speed as a trained shinobi. She is frequently shown with two kunai as her weapon of choice, as are Uzui’s other wives.

Soon to be retired

After losing his arm and his eye in the fight with Gyutaro Tengen will be retiring from the corps’ main hashiras.

He was able to battle Gyutaro with one hand thanks to his Musical Score Technique, but the fact that it took him so long to perfect it during the fight means it’s not something he can constantly rely on to compensate for the loss of his left hand.

Tengen is a shinobi and a Hashira who is prepared to lose his life to destroy demons, so when he claims he can’t fight any longer, he means it.

Hinatsuru’s desire to live a regular life is a crucial reason for Tengen’s retirement. Hinatsuru was the one who advised retiring if they ever conquered an Upper-Rank in a previous flashback.

Tengen, despite his formal retirement, participates in Hashira Training with his wives. He is in charge of the first level, which includes basic endurance training.

His adores Kyojuro Rengoku

Uzui feels Rengoku is more flashy and attractive than him.

Tengen offered special appreciation for Kyojuro, describing him as a very excellent Demon Slayer unlike himself.

Even Giyuu, Iguro, and Sanemi, who are often anti-social and unapproachable to most, thought he was a nice guy to be around.

Tengen left his clan for good

Tengen Uzui and his eight siblings were raised as shinobi by their obsessive, harsh father. Tengen stated to Gyutaro, in order to get Upper Six to stop swooning over him, that seven of his siblings perished as a result of their father’s shinobi training.

Surprisingly, Anime deleted a Manga element that lends another depth of sadness to Tengen’s childhood.

Tengen acknowledged to Gyutaro in the manga that his father forced the Uzui children to fight to the death while blindfolded and ignorant they were battling each other, which resulted in Tengen being responsible for the deaths of two of his own brothers.

Tengen laments his departed brothers as he pours sake over the Uzui family gravestone, wondering if the Uzui siblings could have all gone out for drinks together someday if they had all survived.

Conclusion

  • Tengen Uzui may have a flashy exterior throughout the series but his flamboyance is used to cope up with his past traumas.
  • Tengen Uzui is the series’ second strongest Hashira in terms of physical strength, as well as the series’ quickest Hashira.
  • In a fight, he exploits his physical advantages, as well as his breathing pattern, to give him an advantage, and he even leverages his expertise as a Shinobi to give him an advantage.
