The 5 Sweetest Shouju Protagonists (Discussed)

Shoujo Anime is all about beautiful and meaningful friendships and relationships that resonate with reality to some extent. Keeping this in mind, shoujo protagonists are often sweet and kind.

However, not all of them are like that, some can MCs can be mean and arrogant or downright abusive too. But as the story unfolds, these main characters change themselves and become better people for themselves and their romantic interests and friends.

In most of the coming-of-age plots of shoujo Anime, there are 2 types of protagonists who make the story interesting and fun to watch such as

  • The kind one, but a pushover who needs to learn to stop letting people treat them poorly.
  • The obnoxious one needs to learn to respect the emotions and thoughts of others.

Everything in between too. While the romance and “Will they, won’t they?” elements are intriguing, it’s also important to pay attention to how the protagonist, or protagonists, evolve.

In this blog, I will list out the shoujo protagonist who are the nicest characters with traits like empathy, understanding, and helpfulness.

9 typical characters in a shoujo Anime

Shoujo protagonists are always loved and appreciated by others since they go beyond their capacity to help others and understand their situations. These shoujo characters shine because of their interpersonal skills and emotional backstories

Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura

main character of Cardcaptor Sakura
Sakura is the eponymous main character of Cardcaptor Sakura.

Sakura Kinomoto is a character in the Cardcaptor Sakura Anime. She is the protagonist of the series and the center of affection for many characters, including Syaoran Li, Meiling Li, and Yue Ayase.

Sakura is a beacon of hope for anyone around her. She has the ability to make friends with nearly anyone, and her friends regard her as someone they can rely on. Even those who were initially cruel to her, such as Syaoran or Meiling, gradually succumb to her sweetness and lovely appeal.

While Sakura might be naive at times, she can also be highly perceptive to others’ feelings and situations. She is kind and gentle, but also very determined and courageous.

She has the ability to use magic to capture the Clow cards, but she doesn’t rely on her powers alone. Rather, she uses them as a last resort when all other options have been exhausted.

Takeo from My Love Story

Takeo
Takeo is often misunderstood for his bulky appearance.

Takeo Gouda is a man of many faces. He can seem as tough and scary as a bear, or as friendly and cuddly as a puppy. The only thing that really matters to Takeo is protecting his friends and the ones he loves from harm.

Takeo has a huge exterior, which may make him appear menacing to those around him. But to those who know him well, he’s nothing more than a cute puppy, especially to his favorite Rinko.

Takeo is noted for being exceedingly trusting and friendly to everyone he meets. This makes him a reliable source of information for his buddies.

He believes in fairness and will go to any length to protect his friends and those he considers innocent from harm, whether it is verbal or physical violence.

Haru Yoshida from My Little Monster

Haru Yoshida is a warm and talkative person as one gets to know him
Haru Yoshida is a warm and talkative person as one gets to know him.

Haru Yoshida is a young man who suffers from a bad case of social anxiety. He’s been teased and bullied throughout his life, but he doesn’t let it get him down.

Haru Yoshida is troubled, to put it simply. He is often irritated, frequently gets into confrontations at school, and has a bad connection with his family.

Despite these obstacles, he sincerely cares about his classmate and future lover, Shizuku. She loves him despite her refusal to put up with his terrible behavior.

Haru’s love for Shizuku is never-ending. He is willing to do anything for her, even if it means losing himself in his desire for her affection.

Haru is a teenager who feels like he has no control over his life. He is constantly at odds with his parents, teachers, and peers. In fact, the only person he seems to get along with is Shizuku.

He has a strong desire to protect Shizuku, even if she turns down all of his advances.

Hirotaka Nifuji from Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Hirotaka
Hirotaka is just our regular otaku guy with an office romance

Hirotaka Nifuji is the gentleman dude who originally made Narumi Momose a major admirer of all things otaku.

When someone wears glasses, people usually make jokes about how smart they are or how much they read.

But in Hirotaka’s case, it’s because of his unwavering passion for video games, which is understandable in the age of Minecraft, blockbuster titles, and Twitch feeds. Also, he is a chain smoker.

While some people consider otaku to be socially undesirable, Hirotaka isn’t afraid to proclaim himself one, which is admirable.

He enjoys Anime, comics, and video games, but he never lets his hobbies interfere with his efficiency at work. Finally, he’s endearingly romantic in his own otaku way.

Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket

Tohru
Tohru has a tragic past but she is a beam of sunshine and happiness

The new Fruits Basket Anime adaptation is one of the best things to happen to the shoujo genre in recent years.

This time, it has faithfully adapted the manga from beginning to end, and it has brought Tohru to be one of my favorite shoujo Anime protagonists.

Tohru’s family life wasn’t perfect, like a few other entries here, when she was only three years old, her father passed away, then her mother was killed in an accident.

Fruits Basket begins with Tohru, who is about to start high school, becoming an orphan and living in a tent. Fortunately for her, Yuki and Shigure take her in after she unintentionally sets the tent up on their property.

And it’s impossible not to adore Tohru. She is incredibly compassionate, upbeat, and selfless toward others, but that’s the issue Tohru is carrying everyone else’s burdens and smiling through it all because she’s concealing something.

She really does care about the people she loves. Yes. She is, however, using her selflessness to distract herself from the harsh reality that her mother, whom she values most, has already passed away.

It makes sense that she struggles with self-esteem and abandonment. But Tohru persists, overcoming her past and becoming a better person every day.

While she occasionally comes off as naive and airheaded, Tohru is an admirable person who is always sympathetic and wholly human.

Other than these super cute and sweetest shoujo protagonists, here are some other notable characters from shoujo Anime that cannot be forgotten at all.

Every one of these characters has their own characteristics that make them the best one. So which is the best one, it’s up to your opinion.

Final Words

  • All of these characters have such personality that makes you root for them.
  • The shoujo genre can be rather confusing for viewers. It’s all about fantasy, drama, and romance so if this doesn’t sound like something you’d see in other genres.
  • Just as you dive deeper into Anime you will get their true understanding of what they feel and how they think. So if anyone is into watching a show of the shoujo genre, then be advised to watch any of the character stories I mentioned above.
