Yu Yu Hakusho: The Four Saint Beasts And Their Special Abilities, Explained

YuYu Hakusho was a mainstay of Anime in the 1990s and is still adored by lots of viewers all around the world.

Along with its endearing cast of misfit heroes, one of the reasons it still holds audiences’ attention is the fact that it features some intriguing antagonists

Many people, and deservedly so, include Sensui or Toguro in their lists of the top YuYu Hakusho antagonists.

One group of villains from the “Maze Castle” arc of Season 1 is typically disregarded, though.

The Four Saint Beasts are not the most deadly of all, but they are far from weak, and they present Yusuke and his crew with a significant task.

What is YuYu Hakusho?

Yoshihiro Togashi is the author and illustrator of the Japanese manga series YuYu Hakusho.

The series follows Yusuke Urameshi, an adolescent delinquent who is murdered by an automobile while attempting to save a child’s life. Yusuke is revived and granted the title of “Underworld Detective” following a series of tests handed to him by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the afterlife Underworld, with which he must investigate numerous cases involving demons and apparitions in the Human World.

As the manga proceeds, it becomes more concentrated on martial arts battles and tournaments. Togashi began work on YuYu Hakusho in November 1990, drawing inspiration from his interests in the occult and horror films, as well as Buddhist mythology.

Is Yu Yu Hakusho worth watching?

Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely worth watching.

The anime’s subject is pretty profound. The themes are rather grim, and the various story arcs about life and death. There is comedy, but it serves as a diversion from the more serious subjects.

I believe the show first acquired popularity on Toonami because the royal battle style of fighting was comparable to DBZ and other anime presented at the same time, earning it the label of a “kids” show.

Kids can watch it because they comprehend the action and combat. Whether the real narrative line involves the loss of a loved one or a darker goal, such as destroying the earth, it completely escapes the notice of children.

Who are the Four Saint Beasts?

Genbu, The Stone Beast.
He can change into any type of rock and is the weakest of the four Saint Beasts.
Saint BeastsPowers and Abilities
Genbu, The Stone BeastHe is the least powerful of the four Saint Beasts and can transform into any variety of rock. His entire home is made of stone, and he uses this to his advantage to launch surprise assaults by fusing with the rock and blasting his tail at his foe from all angles. He initially appears unbeatable and appears to have the upper hand over Kurama, but Kurama eventually beats him by focusing on Genbu’s control core, which is analogous to the hypothalamus in the human brain, during one of his attacks, grabbing it, and then slicing it in half with his Rose Whip.
Byakko, The White TigerByakko, arguably the most resilient of the four Saint Beasts, has the power to absorb and guide weaker spirit energy. His hideout is largely made up of enormous platforms that protrude from a lava pit. Kuwabara defeats him by throwing him into a lava pit in his own lair. Only when Seiryu applies his Ice Dragon technique to him and kicks him in the head does he succumb to death.
Seiryu, The Blue DragonSeiryu, the most ebullient of the four Saint Beasts, has the power to control the temperature of his environment. His hideout is a plain space that is exceptionally cold and covered in ice. After being slashed sixteen times in a split second, Hiei kills him.
Suzaku, Leader of the Four Saint BeastsSuzaku, the head of the four Saint Beasts, has the power to control and increase the ambient static electricity in his environment. Demon World’s continual lightning strikes actually increase the strength of his attacks. When Yusuke overwhelms him with one more shot from the shotgun after using all of his life’s energy to do so, he is beaten.

Is Kuramma a S-Class?

The most powerful beings are those of the S-Class. They are at the pinnacle of the S-Class scale.

Since Yusuke attained S-Class levels following his training in Demon World and had a power level of over 200,000 in his base or relaxed state, it is inferred that anyone with a power level of above 150,000 is S-Class.

On the other hand, Yoko Kurama from the Three Kings Saga has a power level of more than 150,000.

Kurama is no match for Shigure, despite being of the lesser S-class power level.

He changes into an upper S-class Yoko during violent combat and easily avoids Shigure by employing super speed, but he willingly changes back into his human form after saying that he won’t utilize that power.

Inaccurately described in the Anime as A/A+, Team Kurama was able to compete with strong S-class demons.

They are all more powerful than standard mid-S-class demons in the Manga. Demons in the S-class have been revealed to be the most sensitive in the series.

What does Yusuke’s Spirit Beast do?

Yusuke’s Spirit Beast is called Pu, also referred to as Puu in the Anime’s English dub.

Small, beady-eyed, and resembling a bird, Puu has tiny “arms,” a small patch of black hair on his head that resembles Yusuke’s haircut, an all-blue body, a whitish-blue belly, a yellow beak and feet, and tiny “legs.”

His long, floppy ears might be used to fly despite their size.

After Yusuke’s resurrection, Puu develops into his “adult” appearance, becoming a massive bird with a swan-like appearance and a phoenix-like wingspan, long neck, long ears, a long black mane, and large tail feathers.

Puu can now be ridden by at least four people while in this form, which is much larger.

Being a spirit animal, Puu takes after its owner’s personality. Puu is actually very nice, in contrast to Yusuke’s lackadaisical bad-boy demeanor.

This is because he is a true mirror of Yusuke’s innermost self.

He assists Yusuke in completing his spirit orb training and directs Keiko to Yusuke in case he ever gets into danger.

Pu also stands for Yusuke’s inherent innocence and purity.

Pu, also known as Yusuke's Spirit Beast.
Puu adopts the character of its owner. Unlike Yusuke, who has a lax bad-boy attitude, Puu is actually very sweet.

What Class Demon is Hiei?

When Hiei first confronted Yusuke, he was an Upper D-class. The world’s strongest average citizens with spiritual awareness are all D-class.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s YuYu Hakusho Anime and Manga series has Hiei as a pivotal character. In the Viz Manga, he is referred to as “Hiei of the Evil Eye.

Due to his preference for maintaining his distance from people, Hiei is frequently seen as being elusive and remote.

He frequently belittles and mocks people and their emotions as well as the value they place on friendship and life.

He has a rather pessimistic and even misanthropic perspective on the world.

Even though he tends to keep to himself, he does occasionally argue and disrespect his teammates, notably Kuwabara, because of how different their personalities are.

He clearly has a certain level of regard and kinship for his teammates, although Kurama and Yusuke appear to be his closest friends.

Although he feels a kinship with demons, he also prefers humans and despises inferior demons, such as braggarts and “tourists,” who lack the will to earn his respect.

Hiei is a fairly impartial warrior when it comes to his foes. No of their age or gender, he treats all of his enemies with the same level of brutality.

This is demonstrated when, just as his power is beginning to resurface, he terrorizes Ruka and the Masked Fighter with threats of death.

However, according to Kurama, he has an honor code that forbids him from going all out against someone he believes to be a weaker opponent than himself.

Hiei has slain the most enemies in combat out of anyone on the team, frequently following through on an earlier promise.

One of his greatest weaknesses, which people like Genkai were well aware of, was his phenomenal arrogance and tendency to underestimate his opponents.

It was this trait that contributed to Hiei’s loss to Yuu Kaito’s Power of Taboo, which was noted to be one of his greatest weaknesses.

This apparently eventually led to a great deal of irony because Hiei made fun of Yusuke for being able to overcome Toguro but still manage to be quickly abducted by humans, only for Hiei to have the opposite experience and defy Yusuke’s expectations.

He himself is not a particularly smart combatant, despite constantly mocking Kuwabara’s intelligence.

His main fighting style is to surge in with all of his might and completely overpower the opposition.

Hiei was first from Upper D-Class.
His primary method of combat is to charge in full force and fully overwhelm the opposition.

Conclusion

  • The names of the four Saint Beasts are taken from the mythological creatures that in Sino-Japanese tradition represented the four cardinal directions. Despite this, it seems the Spirit World has no knowledge of the Saint Beasts specifically, if not generally, in relation to the narrative.
  • Demon City, also known as the “City of Ghosts and Apparitions” in the English dub, is ruled by the Saint Beasts and is home to low-level apparitions of the E and C Classes.
  • In order to release their power outside of the city, these four legendary monsters were famous for being made to live inside the huge “Maze Castle.”
