Join me as I explain their complex relationship and which manga they belong to.

Which Manga Franchise are they from?

Gon and Killua are the characters of the internationally recognized manga Hunter X Hunter, which is notorious for its lengthy hiatus and gaps between chapters.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter X Hunter is a manga series written and illustrated by him. Since March 1998, it has been serialized in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump, though the manga has frequently gone on extended hiatuses since 2006.

The plot revolves around a young boy named Gon Freecss, who discovers that his father, who abandoned him when he was young, is a world-renowned Hunter, which is basically a licensed professional that specializes in locating rare or unidentified animal species, surveying uncharted territories and hunting down lawless individuals.

Gon sets out on a journey to become a Hunter and ultimately discovers his father. On his journey, Gon encounters many creatures, villains, and other friendly hunters.

Hunter has been a major critical and financial success becoming one of Shueisha’s best-selling manga series with over 84 million copies in print as of July 2022.

In which chapter did Gon and Killua meet?

Gon and Killua first time meeting
Hunter X Hunter Manga by Yoshihiro Togashi

Gon first meets Killua in Chapter 7 of the Hunter X Hunter manga, which is during the first Hunter Exam arc.

In the anime Gon meets Killua in episode 4, which is adapted from the following chapters in the manga:

  • Chapter 6
  • Chapter 7
  • Chapter 8

They meet during the first trial of the hunter exams, here’s a short summary of their meeting:

The applicants have to run for two hours straight, covering a distance of more than thirty kilometers from their starting point.

When Leorio observes an applicant (Killua) using his skateboard, Leorio gets furious. He considers it a mockery of the Hunter Exam, but Gon defends the applicant claiming that the examiner only directed them to follow him and didn’t restrict them from using any means.

The applicant expresses interest in Gon and inquires about his age. When he realizes they are the same age, he hops from the skateboard and catches it with a trick, begins running beside Gon, and introduces himself as Killua.

Gon and Killua also explain why they are taking the Hunter Exam. Killua joined for fun, believing that the exam would be difficult enough.

Gon aspires to be a Hunter, much like his father. Gon is unable to tell Killua what kind of Hunter his father is. Killua finds that strange, and Gon reveals that he was raised by his aunt Mito and thus knows little about his father.

Gon expresses interest in learning why his father decided to be a Hunter over parenting his son.

They both arrive at the exit and sprint ahead of Satotz. They argue about who arrived first and urge Satotz to decide for them. Satotz responds by saying that they both came at the same moment.

Gon suggests that because he and Killua won, they treat each other to dinner.

What is Gon and Killua’s relationship?

At first, Gon and Killua were just acquaintances; they weren’t necessarily friends; instead, Killua found Gon’s childish and innocent attitude intriguing, as it stood in stark contrast to Gon’s monster-like physical abilities.

They became friends and allied throughout the Hunter Exam arc. Even after the Exam, they agreed to trek together to discover Gon’s father.

Throughout the journey, they became more than just friends, practicing together and overcoming challenges by putting themselves in life-threatening circumstances by fighting more tougher, more experienced opponents.

Throughout their journey, Killua got further enamored by Gon’s attitude and cheerful outlook on life. Killua once stated, “Gon is such a dazzling light that it’s often difficult to look at him.” However, this impression of Gon doesn’t last.

Killua had always had feelings for Gon. Killua didn’t want to be an assassin any longer he didn’t want to live at all. When he first met Gon, he noticed how happy he made everyone around him, and how everything appeared to grow better when Gon was around.

Gon was Killua’s ‘light.’ Killua needed Gon’s casual outlook on life so that he could lead by example.
The Chimera Ant arc follows.

Gon transformed after witnessing Kite after he was caught by the Chimera Ants (in his reanimated puppet form). He grew incensed with vengeance, and his entire universe darkened. He effectively transformed into Killua.

This doesn’t make Killua dislike Gon or anything, but it did damage the thing Killua required from Gon.

Killua was content with doing his own thing for a while once the Chimera Ants were dealt with because he no longer needed Gon around and could now aid Alluka instead and pay it forward.

So they each began their journey, effectively becoming withered souls at this point.

In which chapter did Gon and Killua separate?

In episode 147 of the anime, Gon and Killua separate to go off on their respective journey. Killua with his sister Alluka, and Gon with his long-sought-after dad. This episode is adapted from chapters 337 and 338, with the duo saying their goodbyes in chapter 337.

Their goodbye was sort of melodramatic and the ending felt like an unfinished book (which the manga is).

Gon walks away saying “Kite said that wherever we go we’ll always remain friends!” to which Killua replies “Yeah!’ with a smile. They have a solemn look on their faces which probably illustrates their dissatisfaction with the sudden goodbye.

As of right now, in the current arc of the manga, The main characters are Leorio, Kurapika, Hisoka, and the Phantom Troupe, and there are no indications of either Gon or Killua in the current arc.

However, the manga is still ongoing despite the multiple prolongated hiatuses so there’s no telling what the next arc would entail. So it’s very likely that this once inseparable duo would reunite later on in the manga, granted we may not be able to witness it in this century.

That being said, Hunter x Hunter is finally back from its hiatus and is scheduled for at least a few more arcs before the author inevitably decides to take yet another hiatus.

Is Gon’s story over since he can no longer use Nen?

Chapter 345 from Hunter X Hunter Manga by Yoshihiro Togashi

Probably not. According to Ging, Gon is no longer able to see auras or manipulate Nen.

He gave up all of his potential and Nen to eliminate Pitou.  According to Ging, Gon has been granted a wonderful blessing by simply regaining his life. Rather than being ungrateful, Gon should take advantage of this opportunity to figure out what he wants to achieve with his life.

He’s accomplished his aim of becoming a Hunter, understanding what was so fantastic about life that a father would abandon his son.

Even without Nen, his combat prowess remains dominant. Gon still possesses monstrous physical strength.

Of course, the author did include one large Easter egg. Ging told Gon that regaining his Nen talents would almost certainly come at a cost,  The inference is that the cost will be enormous. So there’s undoubtedly a method to get it back, albeit at a higher cost.

The time when Gon climbs the World Tree gives me hope that he may regain his Nen abilities. While climbing the World Tree, Gon was able to sense and connect with the tree’s energy. This suggests that Gon is still sensitive to life forces.

While the HxH world is unique, and there is no information on whether its Nen system is based on a genuine mystical tradition, the parallelism of Nen with Chi or the core idea of life force and animism is obvious. Nen could be characterized as the energy inherent in all beings and objects based on the concept of life force.

It’s simple and natural. According to a chapter in the Chimera Ant storyline, even regular individuals have Nen or aura, however undeveloped. Those who go through the process of building and honing their Nen or fundamental aura can employ their Nen as specialized power—and in Netero’s case, spiritual power.

Anyway, I’m starting to ramble. My argument is that Gon, now that he gets his life back, still retains his intrinsic Nen, however, he must go on a new path to become receptive to his Nen once more. I’m sure author Togashi still wants to expand on Gon’s character.

Can anyone honestly expect Gon to spend the rest of his life cleaning fish with Mito on Whale Island? Especially after all of his experiences and new friends? It’s bad enough that Mito assigned him two years of back study!

Can Gon get his nen back?

Why did Killua and Gon take different roads?

They parted ways because Killua had found his life’s mission and had let go of Gon as this pristine pillar of light.

When Gon and his pals returned to Killua’s house after the Exam to, sort of, rescue him, Killua realized he had made a friend. As a result, he proceeded with Gon.

However, Gon already had a mission, which was to find his father. He had chosen his road and was traveling down it in order to achieve his goal. Killua, on the other hand, was aimless, purposeless, and had no calling in life other than to be by Gon’s side.

Will Killua and Gon ever be reunited?

Fans believe that because the anime concluded with their goodbye, that’s the last time they’ll see each other, but the truth is revealed in the manga. I believe they’ll rejoin very soon because Alluka claimed that “once she’s had her brother by herself for a bit, she’ll give him back to Gon”.

The HxH manga is still being worked on, and the main protagonists are now Kurapika, Leorio, Hisoka, and the Phantom Troupe. The manga doesn’t appear to be coming to a finish anytime soon, not only due to the sabbatical but also because there are still A LOT more Arcs to cover.

Killua’s present goal is to spend time with his sister and protect her from Illumi and the rest of the Zoldycks for as long as possible, while Gon is simply going around the world with Kite’s buddies.
