Gear 5 Luffy (Explained)

The main character of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy, sets out on a journey to become the Pirate King during the Great Pirate Era.

Using the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a devil fruit with incredible strength, Luffy transformed into a rubber man and has since become incredibly strong.

Luffy has developed what he refers to as gears overtime to advance his skills. The Enies Lobby storyline is where Luffy invented his Gear Second and Gear Third.

After the two-year time jump, Luffy created the Gear Fourth concept in a variety of variations.

Despite having access to some of the most deadly foes on the seas, he wasn’t at his best until the Wano Country arc.

In the end, Luffy battled Kaido while wearing Gear 5, his most potent transformation to date and purportedly the embodiment of him at his best.

What is One Piece?

Eiichiro Oda wrote and drew the Japanese comic strip One Piece. Since July 1997, it has been serialized in Shueisha’s shnen manga magazine Weekly Shnen Jump, and individual chapters have been compiled into 105 tankbon volumes as of March 2023.

Monkey D. Luffy is the novel’s protagonist, a child whose body grew rubber differentiae after accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. In order to become the next King of the Pirates, Luffy and his pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, travel the Grand Line in pursuit of the late King of the Pirates Gol D. Roger’s ultimate prize, get recognized as the “One Piece,” in order to become the next King of the Pirates.

The manga has inspired a media franchise since it was turned into a festival film by Production I.G and an anime series by Toei Animation, which debuted in 1999. Toei has also produced fourteen animated feature films, one original video animation, and thirteen television specials. Numerous companies have created merchandising and media, such as trading card games and video games.

What is Gear 5 in One Piece?

Gear 5 was produced as a result of Luffy waking his Devil Fruit for the first time since the Void Century during the Assault on Onigashima’s climax.

After awakening, Luffy gains even more freedom and demonstrates many new abilities, such as being able to manipulate the shape and size of his body freely. Instead of focusing on hardening himself using Busoshoku Haki, he adopts a more cartoonish fighting style, as well as being able to grant the environment around him the same properties as a rubber. It permitted him to deflect a Bolo Breath by bouncing it back at Kaidou and stretching objects.

As Kaidou pointed out, Luffy’s power now resembles both Paramecia and Zoan-types.

How does Luffy Gear 5 work?

Luffy‘s stretchy devil fruit abilities were used to manufacture all of his equipment.

Gear Second greatly enhances his physical skills by using his rubbery physique to pump blood through his body more swiftly.

He inflates his fragile bones with air in Gear Third to develop giant-sized limbs and unleash deadly attacks.

Luffy escalates the situation with Gear Fourth by merging his devil fruit and Haki

To execute some of the most incredible feats, such as flying through the air, Luffy can tighten the rubber and use the forces of compression and elasticity to his advantage in battle.

However, when using Gear 5, Luffy doesn’t make use of any of his core devil fruit abilities.

The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, also known as Luffy’s devil fruit, served as Gear 5’s primary source of inspiration.

During the Wano Country plotline, Luffy was able to awaken his devil fruit after losing to Kaido three times.

It was via this that his devil fruit was able to ultimately break through its limits.

It gave him a new transformation instead, which, in classic Luffy manner, he labeled Gear 5, as his devil fruit was actually a Mythical Zoan and not a Paramecia.

In this form, Luffy transforms into an all-white being that resembles the “Sun God” Nika.

In this form, Luffy’s eyebrows are similar to Sanji’s. Most importantly, Luffy enters this state as a “Warrior of Liberation,” gaining even more physical freedom and being able to use all of his creative fighting abilities.

How does Luffy get Gear 5?

The beginning of Luffy’s gear 5 change occurs at the conclusion of One Piece chapter 1043.

The discoveries in Chapter 1044 about the nature of Luffy’s devil fruit and his present condition were then followed by a sequence of astounding revelations, which were then capped off by the disclosure of Luffy’s “awakened” Gear 5 form.

According to the widely accepted theory, for Luffy to awaken, he had to be on the verge of passing away.

This made it possible for his heartbeat to be revived and allowed him to gain new abilities.

Is Gear 5 Luffy the Strongest?

Without a question, Gear 5 showcases Luffy at his very finest.

Luffy's 5 Gear is the strongest.
Luffy’s 5 Gear is the strongest.

When Luffy noticed that his heart sounded different after awakening this power, Zunesha told the audience that Luffy’s heart produces a sound called the Drums of Liberation

With this particular heartbeat, Luffy is at the height of his abilities. As Luffy’s heart starts to beat like a drum, he is drawing on the newly awakened abilities of his devil fruit.

This suggests that Luffy’s rubber body is much tougher and rubberier than before, the Gorosei explains.

His devil fruit is the silliest power in the One Piece universe because he battles with even more freedom at the same time.

Luffy has access to a metamorphosis that is much more potent than anything he has ever experienced because he is a Mythical Zoan.

Only in this form is he able to utilize the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, to its fullest ability.

Luffy’s rubber body is granted a great level of freedom once it is activated, and he starts to fight like something Kaidou might see in a comic book.

Luffy develops into a lot funnier character, and he may influence others to do the same.

When Luffy fought Kaidou, who grabbed him by the tail and flung him around, viewers got a wonderful preview of this episode.

He can also accomplish amazing feats like flying through the air so swiftly that he leaves a trail of fire in his wake.

With much tougher rubber than previously, Luffy is now able to easily change the size of his body without even needing air.

At his peak, he can even effortlessly transform into a giant, demonstrating just how absurd his devil fruit really is.

As seen by the fact that Luffy was able to retain the shape of Kaidou’s Kanabo after being struck by it, Luffy’s body is so pliable that it can even withstand deadly blows.

The ability of Luffy’s Gear 5 to also enable him to use rubber to alter his immediate surroundings with his surroundings, a characteristic of the Paramecia kinds, is perhaps one of the strangest aspects of the gear.

Due to the unique qualities of his devil fruit, Luffy can accomplish this despite being a Mythical Zoan, which even Kaido recognized in battle.

However, Luffy doesn’t stop there. He has the ability to instantly turn his surroundings into rubber.

No substance-based Paramecia devil fruit awakening user has yet been able to transform other individuals into rubber when they come into contact with them, unlike Luffy.

Similar to him, Doflamingo was able to turn Dressrosa into strings without affecting the people around him.

However, unlike Katakuri, Luffy was unable to transform his surroundings into Mochi.

In his confrontation with Kaidou, Luffy showed that he had the power to turn anything he touches into rubber, which gives him considerably more freedom in fighting.

Kaidou’s insides could be damaged if Luffy transformed her into rubber. He could even launch himself out of his mouth by opening his eyes and spreading his arms.

Kaidou was changed into a jumping rope, which is utterly ludicrous given that Kaidou is a Yonko.

When Luffy was wearing Gear 5, it seemed as though he could change inanimate items like lightning into rubber.

Supposedly turning a lightning bolt into the rubber at the end of One Piece Chapter 1046, Luffy showed he could grab a lightning bolt by itself.

Even with Kaidou’s incredible strength, fighting such a creature is incredibly difficult.

Luffy’s Gear 5 enables him to pull off some of the most absurd feats in the story, like enlarging his fist to the size of an entire island, as is to be expected of a power referred to as the most ridiculous ability in One Piece.

Luffy Gear 5 Techniques

Luffy’s Gear 5 have 6 techniques.

As of right now, only a few Gear 5 techniques have been made public. But the one thing that unites all of these drawing methods is their absurdity and cartoonishness.

And Luffy’s Gear 5 goes perfectly with these cartoony vibes. Oda seems to have been preparing for this for a long time.

Here’s a table that shows Luffy 5 gear techniques:

Gum-Gum BalloonWith the use of this Gear 5 maneuver, Luffy’s body expands like a balloon. This form can float like a balloon, unlike his other forms that adopted the balloon shape. With the Gear 5, Luffy has extraordinary buoyancy. When he invaded Kaidou’s body, he employed the Gum-Gum Balloon (Gomu Gomu no Fusen). Additionally, Kaidou’s body also grew like a balloon, not only him. And Kaido, Yamato, and Momonuske were all taken aback by how quickly Kaido grew.
Gum-Gum Escape RocketIn order to grab Kaidou’s nose and push himself out of his body, Luffy extends his arms into Kaidou’s eyes. According to the circumstance, he employed the Gum-Gum Escape Rocket (Gomu Gomu no Dasshutsu Rocket) technique.
Gum-Gum GiantThe entire body of Luffy enlarges to the size of a gigantic. This move is comparable to Gum-Gum Giant Pistol from Gear 3. However, in Gear 5’s Gum-Gum Giant (Gomu Gomu no Gigant), his entire body gets grown into a giant size rather than just an arm or a leg.
Gum-Gum Jump RopeWhile still in his Gum-Gum Giant state, Luffy utilizes Kaidou as a skipping rope. Another situational method is the gum-gum jump rope (Gomu Gomu no Nawatobi).
Gum-Gum LightningLuffy does this maneuver to grasp lightning and lob it in Kaidou’s direction. There are several mysteries surrounding the Gum-Gum Lightning (Gomu Gomu no Kaminari) technique.
Gum-Gum Bajrang GunWith this maneuver, Luffy extends his right arm in a manner reminiscent of his Gear 3. But this time it is enormous like Onigashima and covered in Ryuo, which is Wano’s term for Haki. Luffy Ryuo was taught by Hyogoro to help him defeat foes without coming in contact with them. Ryuo and Luffy are both wearing Gum-Gum Bajrang Guns to prevent Kaidou’s most recent attack, the Flame Dragon Torch, from melting Luffy’s hand.
